National Volunteer Week is taking place 17th – 23rd May 2021.  We are also sharing our week with International Day for Biological Diversity which takes place on 22nd May.

South Leinster Volunteer Centres are taking this opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful and dedicated work of volunteers to promote biodiversity and protect our native flowers, plants, insects, and animals.

This ONLINE workshop is suitable for volunteers who wish to gain an increased understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues and the threats to our native biodiversity.

2. The major threats to our national biodiversity
3.  Invasive species – how to identify them and how you can help

Invasive alien species (IAS) can have a severe detrimental effect on our native ecosystems and biodiversity, so much so that invasive species are the second biggest cause of extinction amongst our native species with only habitat loss having a greater negative effect.

Join us to learn about the importance of well-functioning ecosystems and the threat to biodiversity posed by invasive alien species in your locality.

You will learn to identify some of the most common and widespread invasive species in Ireland in addition to learning an easy way to deal with Himalayan Balsam, a very frequently occurring species that is most closely associated with riverbank habitats.
